BIOGRAPHY

Claire Coupland ain’t just another chord strumming folk singer. She is making a name for herself as a moving songwriter, a skilled vocalist, and a compelling guitarist, combining smooth finger picking, soaring melodic lines and a voice described as “the power Susan Tedeschi paired with the clarity and velvety softness of Eva Cassidy”. She effortlessly pulls her audience into her personal world of love and life experiences, but always with a touch of her “wicked sense of humour” (Rik Emmett). Influenced by folk/rock artists growing up and a degree in Contemporary Music Performance, she blends her own style of intricate folk guitar playing with jazz influenced melodies, progressions and hard hitting arrangements, bringing her own graceful contemporary feel to indie folk music.

VOLUNTEER/ACTIVISM

Claire has provided artist mentorship and her performance talent to non profit organizations such as Girls Rock Camp Toronto, Nellie’s Shelter, Souper Bowls Of Hope and VIA Rail Canada. During Covid 19, she started volunteering for FemFolk, a woman-run community that supports and provides performance platforms for women, non-binary, trans, or intersex musicians who are subject to gender based discrimination. She has also joined the team of directors at the Cowichan South Arts Guild.

She also volunteered in Crete, Greece as an endangered sea turtle tagger and conservation activist (Archelon), worked for NEED Crisis Line (BC) in conjunction with World Suicide Awareness Week and volunteered repairing medieval roads in southern France (La Sabranenque). She also had an interesting youth, having traveled Europe as a child for a year and a half on a canal boat and RV, and was a teaching assistant at a Quaker private school in England.

She has many stories…and many more to tell…

EXTENDED BIO:

Once paralyzed by the fear of showing her songs to anyone else, Claire was encouraged to cultivate her love of songwriting and self expression, with help from mentors such as Rik Emmett and Sienna Dahlen during her Contemporary Music Degree at Humber College, Toronto. Coupland has since independently written three studio EPs, her latest, reaching #3 in the National Folk/Roots/Blues charts in Canada with earshot!. Receiving steady CBC Radio airplay across the country, On The Other Side earned Claire her first song writing nomination (“Love In Your Eyes”, Ontario Arts Council), and has received praise and glowing reviews from music magazines, blogs, and radio stations in the US, UK and Europe. A BC born and raised musician, she has been touring Canada heavily since 2017, already landing major festival slots such as Kingsville Folk Festival, Islands Folk Festival, Midsummer Music Fest, Living Roots Festival as well as 6 transcontinental journeys across the country as VIA Rail Artist On Board. In 2018/2021, she was selected for the Singer Songwriter Residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts where she recorded with Billerman (The Arcade Fire) and worked with mentors such as Fats Kaplin (John Prine, Jack White), The Weather Station, David Francey, Kevin Welch, Kim Richey and Grammy winning song writer Don Henry. Claire was a featured writer for Humber Music's Producer In Residence Week with Bob Ezrin (KISS, Pink Floyd, Lou Reed, Deep Purple, Peter Gabriel), and has showcased at Folk Music Ontario and Folk Alliance International.

She is currently in writing/pre-production for her second full length album.
